Centro-Matic

  • Denton, TX's prolific, eclectic Centro-Matic began in 1995 as a side project for singer/songwriter and guitarist Will Johnson. Though Centro-Matic released a few singles that year, it wasn't until 1997 that the project began to resemble a full-fledged group. After recording the 23-song debut album Redo the Stacks at his friend Matt Pence's home studio, Johnson enlisted Pence as the band's drummer, along with cellist/violinist Scott Danbom and bassist Mark Hedman. The fully formed Centro-Matic recorded over 60 songs in a Milstadt, IL, studio space owned by Son Volt's Jay Farrar; of those, some of the quieter, more emotional songs ended up on the 1999 Idol Records album Navigational, while some louder, lo-fi tracks were collected with B-sides and other unreleased material on the same year's Quality Park release The Static vs. the Strings, Vol. 1.

Grand Archives

  • At first called simply "Archives," but quickly renamed Grand Archives, Brooke's new band featured himself on guitar and vocals, backed with bassist Jeff Montano (the New Mexicans), guitarist Curtis Hall (the Jeunes), multi-instrumentalist Ron Lewis (who maintains a solo career under the name Ghost Stories) and drummer Thomas Wright. With a sound inspired in part by '70s acts like Crosby, Stills Nash & Young and the Eagles (all five members sing), Grand Archives made their live debut in Seattle in the spring of 2007, opening for Brooke's former bandmate Cahoone. They subsequently toured with Modest Mouse while preparing their self-titled debut album for Sub Pop, which the label released in February 2008.

The M's

  • The M's were formed in early 21st century Chicago. During that time they held their very first board meetings and
    unanimously elected themselves to the positions of producer, engineer, songwriter, singer, drummer, guitarist, bassist,
    slide whistler, mouth harpist, keyboard player, arranger, rock god, intern and beer drinker; in no particular order.
    Things progressed quickly then and some accolades followed for tunes that started as simply as a hum in a head and
    flowered into a shared scheme. The M's operated in extremes. Whether clunking along in their doomed shuttle bus,
    recording in the swampy air of an abandoned cafeteria, or later in their frozen Andersonville studio, the Salvation Icebox;
    hardship and levity came and went with the seasons.
    Now as we approach the end of the first decade of this new century, The M's find themselves in a new neighborhood
    with new history and new faces. Faces that look the same but are somehow less familiar. These new faces exist in the
    songs of The M's, born from their passage through the world as musicians, men, fathers, husbands, sons, friends,
    baseball fans, carpenters, drummers, guitar players, producers, authors, real estate moguls, and whatever else they all
    are. The faces in these songs are as real as any, and they are as familiar or as unfamiliar as we are to ourselves.
    The M's have only wanted one thing from the very first - the songs from their collective heads to become real and fly
    through the world. Whether anyone hears them now is not important, because existence is all that is needed for
    epiphany to take shape, and no matter when you arrive you can not be late.
