Cloud Cult

  • Minneapolis' Cloud Cult have been around for awhile now, but only recently have they broken out of their "cult" (no pun intended) status and started receiving widespread recognition. The sudden props from new fans and critics alike had a lot to do with the release of their brilliant album Advice from the Happy Hippopotamus in 2005. It is an album full of soaring orchestration and instantly accessible melodies. Think The Shins meets The Flaming Lips.

From the beginning, the band has been singer/songwriter Craig Minowa who uses a revolving cast of supporting players (recently including two artists who paint onstage during their shows) when playing live. Minowa is an exceptional vocalist (his voice sounds a lot like James Mercer) and is undoubtedly a D.I.Y. musician. He puts out records on his own label, Earthology (all of Earthology's production materials are recyclable and much of the CD sales and concert profits go to environmental causes) and has little to no proper distribution. If you see Cloud Cult live, you will become a fan. Their performances are everything in understanding their genius.

Exit Clov

  • Out of the madness of DC comes trademark Exit Clov tunes of revolution, ennui and societal idiocy -- smart music for kids of the next century. The band's name, a tribute to Samuel's Beckett's "Endgame," is both a call to arms and a personal manifesto. Glossing sweet indie pop vocals over vitriolic bass, drum and guitar grooves, the combo introduces an exclusive sound referred to as "kaleidoscopic pop noir." Seamlessly fusing classical and rock instrumentation the Clov share influences ranging from Bartok to Blondie. Despite the schizophrenia, you won't find Exit Clov straying far from the hot and catchy, delivering antidotes for a generation of music fans who seek songs clever enough to outlast the times. Exit Clov have to their credit two self-produced EPs (2004 Starfish, 2005 Saskwatch), the Jolly Roget Sessions (2006) -- on which they enlisted the help of Roger Greenawalt (No Doubt, Ben Kweller, Iggy Pop, White Stripes) -- and the recently released Respond Respond EP(2007), recorded, mixed and produced by Colin Cobb of Livewire Recordings.

Mason Proper

  • mason proper is a band of isolated hermits from michigan, comprised of jonathan visger, brian konicek, zac fineberg, matt thomson, and garrett jones. they have released an album, and ep, and are about to release their second album, "Olly Oxen Free," on September 23rd.

they write songs about the funny side of trouble and misfortune, and while that sounds like a crazy thing to focus on, it actually ends up keeping them almost entirely sane. they most like the musical moments right before something happens, or right after, and spend as much time in that place as possible.
