Steel Train

  • Much like Southern rock revivalists My Morning Jacket and Kings of Leon, Steel Train essay a post-punk take on the hoary sounds of '70s album-oriented rock; it's classic rock radio sent through a few hipster fuzz pedals. Singer Scott Irby-Ranniar and guitarist Jack Antonoff formed Steel Train (taking their name from the Bob Marley song of the same title) as a busking duo in New York City in 1999. Adding second guitarist Matthew Goldman, bassist Evan Winiker, and drummer Matthias Gruber, the nascent five-piece signed to the successful emo label Drive Thru Records in 2002, releasing the debut EP For You My Dear early the next year. After touring for the album was completed, Goldman and Gruber left Steel Train, replaced by guitarist Daniel Silbert and drummer Jon Shiffman. - Stewart Mason, All Music Guide

Dear And The Headlights

  • Hailing from Phoenix, AZ, rock band Dear and the Headlights is Ian Metzger (vocals, guitar), Joel Marquard (vocals, guitar, keyboard), Chuckie Duff (bass, keyboard), PJ Waxman (vocals, guitar), and Mark Kulvinskas (drums). Prior to forming in 2005, Metzger, Marquard, and Waxman had been playing music together without a rhythm section. Friend Chuckie Duff offered to record a few demo songs, but they had decided to disband after the demos were done. Months later, Duff convinced the band to reassemble. He joined on bass and financed a full-length recording, while they also added Kulvinskas, who joined just in time for the band's first show a couple of weeks later. The quintet was soon opening for bands such as the Bravery, matt pond PA, Make Believe, Idlewild, and the Hold Steady.

Forgive Durden

  • Seattle pop/rock act Forgive Durden first got together in 2003, led by vocalist/guitarist Thomas Dutton. Wanting to get more serious with his songwriting, Dutton soon found kindred musical spirits in schoolmate/bassist Jesse Bauer and drummer Andy Mannino. The trio debuted in September 2004 with its independently released seven-song EP, When You're Alone, You're Not Alone. After the addition of second guitarist Thomas Hunter to the lineup, the quartet hopped on the road in support. Forgive Durden ultimately caught the eye of Fueled by Ramen, inking a deal with the label by the end of 2005. Recording once again with producer Casey Bates, their conceptual label debut, Wonderland, surfaced the following May. The album was a social commentary on the world of capitalism, greed, and corruption metaphorically built around the fictitious Wonderland. Various tour dates with bands like Panic! at the Disco, the Matches, and Gatsbys American Dream followed before Forgive Durden joined the summer's Warped Tour.
