mewithoutYou returns with their 5th studio album Ten Stories, set for release May 15, 2012. A deluxe vinyl edition will be available as well. Helmed by producer and friend of the band Daniel Smith (Sufjan Stevens) and mixed by Brad Wood, Ten Stories is an allegorical collection of songs that, at first listen, follows a winding narrative about a circus train crash in 19th century Montana. But long-time fans of this band know that although we are immediately introduced to a talking elephant, fox and tiger, there is always more than meets the eye.
mewithoutYou – frontman Aaron Weiss, guitarist Michael Weiss, bassist Greg Jehanian and drummer Rickie Mazzotta – will be previewing the new songs during a run of select live shows in early March, beginning March 3rd in Baltimore at Metro Gallery. A U.S. Spring tour will be announced in the coming weeks.

Ten years into their life together as a band, mewithoutYou are still searching, and they still compel us to join them in their search. Well-loved for their introspective and eccentric ruminations on life, love, loss, spirituality and temptation, Ten Stories is the result of a lot of living and a lot of death. After experiencing the joy of a newborn baby in the Weiss family in early 2010, it wasn't too long before several deaths of relatives and friends shook the band to its core. They spent some time apart to live their lives, but it is their deep friendships that always bring them back together again.

Reflecting on their history together, drummer Rickie Mazzotta says, "Think about everything that happens in the course of a decade – death, taxes, scholastics, break-ups, birth, illness, World Series Championships, foggy memories, whack decisions, the loss of innocence, the highest highs and the lowest lows. We've been through a lot together. When we came together to make Ten Stories, it was spawned out of being apart for a while, home with friends and lovers, pursuing other interests and naturally gravitating back towards one another in space and sound."

This natural reunion led to the band beginning work on Ten Stories with a relaxed approach, leisurely enjoying the summer sun and leaving behind any pre-conceived ideas of what kind of songs they wanted to make. The result is an incredibly expansive album, encompassing where the band has been and where they are going. mewithoutYou's last album, 2009's It's All Crazy! It's All False! It's All a Dream! It's Alright!, was a marked departure into the world of folk and written around an acoustic guitar, Ten Stories adds the band's raucous vocals and hard-hitting instrumentation back into the mix. Still present are their melodic overtones and lush orchestration of more recent years, making for a riveting musical journey at the album's every turn.

Through the fable-like interactions of fictitious animals, Ten Stories offers up deep ponderings and keen observations about human character flaws and the circle of life. As the band further explores their signature themes of romantic disaster and quasi-mystical speculation, a naive rabbit falls for a footloose fortune teller and a monastic walrus for a hedonistic owl. A pretentious Fox has a prophetic dream, a starving Bear has a vision of a martyred saint and an indecisive Peacock and gnostic Tiger learn the virtues of megalomania from an ego-annihilated Potter Wasp. From the urgent suspense of album opener "February 1878," to the sweeping drum patterns and gritty vocals of "Grist for the Malady Mill," to the psychedelic gem "Aubergine" to the special guest artist on "Fox's Dream of the Log Flume," it's clear that Ten Stories is one of mewithoutYou's most dynamic albums to date.

"Write Your Story Now: Celebrating 10 Years of Kevin Devine & The Goddamn Band(s)"

NYC Singer-Songwriter Will Perform Three of His
Albums In Full, Dec. 1 at Webster Hall

September 18, 2012 -- Kevin Devine will perform three of his albums -- 2002's Circle Gets The Square, 2005's Split The Country, Split The Street, and 2011's Between The Concrete & Clouds, in their entirety, at a special 10th anniversary show at New York's Webster Hall on December 1. Devine will perform Circle Gets The Square solo, as it was originally recorded; and the latter two albums will be performed with the original lineups of his Goddamn Band from each recording. Tickets go on sale this Friday, September 21, at 12:00 noon eastern time.

Circle Gets The Square and Split The Country, Split The Street will both be reissued on vinyl this fall. Circle... will see its first vinyl released by Brookvale Records; the release date is September 30, but the full run of 750 copies has already sold out on pre-order. Split... will be re-released by Triple Crown Records on November 20 as a double-vinyl package with previously unreleased tracks.

New York native Kevin Devine played in local bands like The Miracle of 86 and Delusion before recording his solo debut, Circle Gets The Square, via Brooklyn indie label Immigrant Sun Records in 2002. He was just a few years beyond the teenager who went to Lollapalooza in the mid '90s, hurling demo cassettes on stage during Sonic Youth's and Pavement's sets in the hope that Thurston Moore or Stephen Malkmus would check out his stuff, but the album earned Devine comparisons to songwriters like Elliott Smith and Bright Eyes, and he soon signed with Triple Crown Records.

Split The Country, Split The Street was his second release for Triple Crown, and followed the breakup of The Miracle of 86, which Devine had continued to front while his solo career started to take off. The album featured full-band rock arrangements, as Devine's more aggressive songs migrated to his solo repertoire.

Devine released two more solo albums, one for Capitol Records and one for indie label Favorite Gentlemen, before signing with Razor + Tie for his latest album, last year's Between The Concrete & Clouds. By now, Devine was a respected veteran, and earned high praise for songs that Spinner called "politically charged and lyrically savvy." Spin wrote of the album's first single, "Off-Screen": "While Devine coos a phrase about hazy daydreams, Neil Young-style gashes of guitar spike up like stalagmites, ultimately climaxing, after nearly two minutes, in a taut, Nada Surf-ian chorus."

Kevin Devine says of the Webster Hall show, "I'd been trying to find an excuse to commemorate 10 years putting out records, something broad and inclusive, a 'thank you' to our audience. Reissuing Circle & Split this fall took care of that, as by now I don't get to play much of that material out very often; playing Concrete made sense, considering we didn't do a proper record release show for it here, or tour the album as it was recorded. I think it'll be a special night, having everyone who has been involved in one space, something singular & celebratory."

Buried Beds
"This is one of those bands that's so good, you simply cannot understand why the world hasn't discovered it yet. Buried Beds is a pop group - no apology necessary, because doing pure pop well (i.e. not boring people to death) is a high-wire act not too many people can pull off. The band was formed in 2003 by Philadelphia indie music mainstay Brandon Beaver (how's that for a pre-existing stage name!) and Eliza Jones. Check out the latest Buried Beds collection, Tremble the Sails, to understand what talented people can do with piano, acoustic guitar, banjo and violin. The arrangements are lush and interesting, the lyrics focused and funny, and the vocal harmonies are Beach Boys good. All the vocals, by the way, were recorded at home, with the band members in their PJs."
