Thee Oh Sees
Thee Oh Sees
Emerging from the distant light we have a new double LP from our own John Dwyer's Thee Oh Sees. The first studio recordings to capture the muscular rhythm section of double drummers Ryan Moutinho and Dan Rincon with ringer bassist Tim Hellman cracking spines, the groove and bludgeon we've come to expect from the live shows is captured seamlessly here - they go from zero to head-splitter from the get-go and on the rare occasions they do let up on the gas a bit, we're treated to some locked-in hypnotizers, too. The guitar sounds more colossal and ethereal at the same time, riding roughshod over the vacuum sealed rhythm section, spiraling skywards, and diving into the emerald depths so quick your guts tingle. Synths, strings and smoke soaked things crawl behind the scenes to make an extra far-out party platter. Served on 45 rpm plates for most excellent listening quality. With amazing visuals and a side D etching by air-brush-van-art maestro Robert Beatty…and packed in vape-proof goat skin. It’s a beast and it can be yours should you choose come August 12th.....come on now.
Zs
Zs
Zs was founded in 2000 and has existed as a trio, sextet, and quartet, now solidifying into the trio formation of Sam Hillmer (tenor saxophone), Patrick Higgins (guitar/electronics), and Greg Fox (drums). While our music has been variously categorized as no-wave, brutal-prog, and post-minimalist, Zs is primarily concerned with making music that challenges the physical and mental limitations of both performer and listener. Manipulating extended technique, unique instrumental synthesis, and near telepathic communication, Zs aims to create works that envelop the listener and unfold sonically over time, evoking unspoken past, present, and future rites and ritual. Zs has performed in lofts, galleries, rock clubs, and concert halls across the United States, Europe and Japan, with The Locust, Gang Gang Dance, Animal Collective, Battles, The Dirty Projectors, Orthrelm, Octis, The Flying Luttenbachers, Behold... The Arctopus, Yellow Swans, Get Hustle, Dan Deacon, Aa, Marnie Stern, Peter Brotzman and Han Bennick, Joe Maneri, Christian Wolff, Louis Andriessen, and Petr Kotik, among many others. Zs has recorded for the Social Registry, Northern-Spy, 31G, Tzadik, Troubleman Unlimited, Planaria, Gilgongo, Sockets, Ricecontrol, and Zum record labels.
Ice Balloons
Ice Balloons
Brooklyn Based Ice Balloons' eight-song debut EP came out in October
of 2013, featuring the track Night Slave that had a video release
on Vice/Noisey the following month. The band is a hodgepodge of
musicians -Sean Powell (FuckEmos), Kyp Malone (TV on the Radio), Dan
Scinta, Rob Bryn (Wild Yaks) Giselle Reiber (Midnight Masses), B.A. Miale
and a common fly on vocals – but more in a garage punk synth-noise vein
than any of the bands from which the members derive.
In live shows, Ice Balloons strive for maximum spectacle, with
video projections (B.A. Miale), piña-colada scented smoke and a whirl of
chaotic noises, all grounded by a 60's garage punk skeleton.
